Supervision

When hours count and what to keep

• Before your degree: Postgraduate only; separate graduate clinical practicum of ≥280 direct client hours required. Doctoral graduates may have half the hours waived (≥1 year)
• Paperwork: Clinical supervision training plan cosigned by supervisor and supervisee, board-approved before hours accrue; changes within 45 days; supervisor submits completion documentation on board forms

Can you be supervised remotely in Kansas?

Yes by video, but the supervisor needs a state-specific supervisor credential and the board must approve the arrangement first. What shapes this: state-only supervisor credential, prior board approval.

• Video supervision: All supervision face-to-face, in person or by synchronous videoconferencing if confidentiality is technologically protected; 1 h per 15 direct hours, 100 h total (50 individual), at least two sessions a month (one individual). • Phone only: not allowed unless the board approves extenuating circumstances
• In-person minimum: none (synchronous video allowed for all supervision)

Recent and pending changes

2021 Senate Sub. for HB 2208 cut hours from 4,000 to 3,000 and allowed televideo supervision; K.A.R. 102-3-7a amended to match, eff. Dec. 16, 2022 (still the current version on rules.ks.gov, 2026-09-25). K.S.A. 65-5804a last amended L. 2023, ch. 90 (adds community-based LPC license).

Where the rules are unclear

Kansas’s own documents disagree or are silent on these points. Ask the board if they affect you:

• K.A.R. 102-3-7a(g)(4)(D) / 102-5-7a(g)(4)(D) require the training plan to document each meeting "as conducted in the same physical space or otherwise, in the case of emergency", which reads as if remote meetings are for emergencies, while subsection (a) of the same rule allows synchronous videoconferencing for all supervision.
