Supervision during the postdoc

Can you be supervised remotely in Louisiana?
Only partly. Some supervision or presence must be in person or on site. What shapes this: in-person minimum, prior board approval, video limited.
- Video supervision: Telesupervision needs board pre-approval (Application for Authorization to Provide Telesupervision, with rationale and fee), may be used only when in-person supervision in the service setting is not feasible, cannot be the sole means of communication, and cannot exceed 50% of required supervisory contact (≤26 hours/year of the weekly individual hour for postdoctoral fellows).
- Phone only: allowed (telesupervision may be two-way video/audio or audio-only)
- In-person minimum: ≥50% of required supervisory contact in person (telesupervision ≤26 of the required individual hours per year for postdocs) unless the board approves extenuating circumstances
- Supervisor licensed in Louisiana? required for telesupervision (telesupervisor must hold a Louisiana license); in-person supervisors need a doctoral license in the jurisdiction where supervision occurs

Where the rules are unclear
Louisiana’s own documents disagree or are silent on these points. Ask the board if they affect you:
- LAC 46:LXIII.105.I (amended June 2026) and the Chapter preface refer to 'two years of full-time supervised and documented postdoctoral experience', while R.S. 37:2356(A)(6), §103.A.5 and §703.A allow one year of predoctoral internship to count. Confirm that only the remainder after internship credit must be postdoctoral.
- §705.A accepts a supervisor licensed in the jurisdiction where supervision occurs, while §1409.E.1 requires a Louisiana license for telesupervision; confirm an out-of-state psychologist cannot telesupervise a Louisiana postdoc.
