Can you be supervised remotely in Minnesota?
Mostly, with some limits. What shapes this: state-only supervisor credential.
- Video supervision: LPCC track (4,000 h, 200 h supervision): >=75% in person or real-time two-way audio-video, and the board must accept 100% via audio-video; <=25% may be telephone/audio; >=50% individual.
- Phone only: allowed for up to 25% of required supervision hours
- In-person minimum: none (video counts toward the 75% synchronous portion; 100% video must be accepted)
- Supervisor licensed in Minnesota? other: must be a BBHT board-approved supervisor who is an LPC, LPCC, LP 'or other qualified supervisor as determined by the board' (or a 245I.04 mental health professional); Minnesota licensure not expressly required
- Supervisor credential: BBHT Board Approved Supervisor designation (4 yrs counseling experience, 45 h supervision training; LPCC general method also >=2 yrs post-licensure clinical experience)
- Board approval first: Rule requires an approved supervision plan (new plan within 30 days of a new supervisor/position, else hours don't count); but the BBHT LPCC Supervision Contract says not to submit it to the board. Supervisor must be board-approved before supervision counts.

Where the rules are unclear
Minnesota’s own documents disagree or are silent on these points. Ask the board if they affect you:
- Minn. R. 2150.5010 subp. 4 E requires an 'approved supervision plan' submitted to the board, but the BBHT LPCC Supervision Contract (1/1/2019) says 'Do not submit this form to the Board.' Must LPCC candidates file a plan before hours count?
- The BBHT LPCC contract (2019) and Section G verification form (2021) say >=75% of supervision 'in person'; Minn. Stat. 148B.5301 subd. 2(c) as amended in 2022 requires the board to accept 100% real-time audio-video. Will video hours be accepted on the current forms?
